March 12, 2009 During Jenn's Tartu visit in March, we decided that our union should be somehow be symbolically locked to that place. Lucky for us there is a love lock tradition practiced there. On nearly every bridge throughout Tartu you can see hundreds of padlocks attached. On a closer look, these padlocks have the names of couples engraved on them. As a symbol of their union, couples leave a lock on a bridge and throw the keys into the river (kind of like a folk version of the unity candle during a wedding ceremony).
Although it was a few months early, we decided to attach part of our commitment to the place in which it began. We got a padlock engraved with our names and wedding date (how incredibly functional we are in Estonia!), put our lock on the bridge, and threw our individual keys into the Emajõgi river as a reminder of our upcoming celebration and exciting life as a couple.
March 24, 2009 Breaking News! The Postimees (local Tartu newspaper) announced the City will do construction on the lock bridge this summer. That means all locks will be removed... Alas! Good thing we made a back up lock to attach to the Fishing Lake this summer in Gillette.
